Young girls made up and dressed up for a weddding in Banton Island smile shyly. Unlike popular notion, weddings in the Philippines are generally held on December rather than June, making this month truly festive. (Photo by Aline Parrone)

TRIVIA CORNER -
"The Recollects arrived at Romblon in 1635. Previous to this time, the islands were administered by the secular clergy. Some of the inhabitants of Romblon therefore, were already Christians at the time of the arrival of the Recollects. In 1637, there were in what is now Romblon Province seven missionary centers namely: Romblon which had a population of 5,858; Badajoz (now San Agustin) with a population of 3,356; Banton with a population of 4,717; Cajidiocan with a population of 7,132; Odiongan with a population of 5,705; Looc with a population of 5,449; and Magallanes which had a population of only 859."

TOURISM SPOTLIGHT
Fort San Nicolas
The fort is also called "cotta" which is an isoceles triangle west to east with the bulwark facing the sea; In the early 90s, the original structure was refurbished and "reconstructed" with the help of the Department of Torusim, hence the original architecture - including the façade no longer grace the scene. About twelve cannons armed the fort during the heyday of muslim piracy. The compound (muralla) which includes the church is walled in and a well near the "cotta" is dug in. The walls are approxiamtely seven meters in height and about a meter and a half thick. Legend has it that when "moro" pirates raided the pueblo the natives would seek shelter in the fort for days -until the attack was repulsed. It is believed that stones were used to ward off the pirates when they attempted to climb the walls.
