First Romblomanon Languages Writeshop Draws 30 Participants

The first Romblomanon Tri-language Writer's Workshop at the Community Outreach Center at the Romblon State College in Odiongan drew about 30 participants, with a few more joining as observers ( for those who could no longer be accommodated as participants). These include mostly students from high school and college but there were faculty and free lance writers as well who came from all over the province. The youngest were 13-year-old high school students and the oldest was 61-year old Virginia Fesariton, president of the Asi Writers' Club.

Organized by the Institute of Business and Accountancy Student Organization (IBASO) and funded by the RDL-CLEAR, the three-day, on-the-spot writing workshop proved to be a wellspring of works in Ini (Romblomanon), Onhan and Asi languages. Panelist Abner Faminiano compares this workshop with the ones he had attended in the past: "…I would say that (the) workshop in Odiongan is the first true writing workshop I have ever participated in. (This) workshop involved all four major literary genres: poetry, essay, short story and one-act play. Indeed to have survived the workshop is no mean feat for the participants, the sponsors and organizers alike."

"I hope that the Odiongan Writer's Workshop would not be the first and the last but would rather be the beginning of a new tradition in the province."

"It could might as well be the seed, as it were, that would sprout a new life for our beloved Romblon's three local tongues and their respective literatures."

For his part, Over-all Workshop Coordinator Eddie G. Fetalvero admitted the overtime work the IBASO staff had to go through was just as overwhelming as the outputs. The team worked round the clock on the second day to encode, print and compile the 108-page manuscript. But on an optimistic note, Fetalvero says, "Under the sanrokan spirit, the mission was accomplished.
