The Volcano Watcher is a Romblomanon

The Philippines' top volcano and earthquake watcher today is a Romblomanon.

Renato Umali Solidum, Jr. 41, of Odiongan, Romblon is the new Director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), an attached agency of the Department of Science and Technology.


The young Phivolcs Director finished his Bachelor of Science in Geology at the University of the Philippines in 1984. After graduation from college, he immediately joined Phivolcs as Science Research Specialist.

In 1988, he served as Shipboard Scientist, Sedimentologist for the Ocean Drilling Program, Singapore to Manila.

He finished his master's degree in geological sciences at the University of Illinois, Chicago in 1994. While taking his masteral program, he served as Research and Teaching Assistant in the same university. He also joined the Scripps Institution of Oceanography as Shipboard Scientist for its survey and sampling of ridge and transform faults from New Zealand to Chile.

On his return to Phivolcs after completing his master degree, he was appointed officer-in-charge of the Vocano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division. Two years later, he was promoted to officer-in-charge of the Office of the Deputy Director..

Last year, he earned his doctorate in earth sciences at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, University of California in San Diego.

Before taking over the helm of the Institute, Dr. Solidum was Chief Science Research Specailaist of its Geology and Geophysics Division.

Aside from volcanoes and earthquakes, Dr. Solidum other fields of specialization are geochemistry, marine geology, geologic hazards assessment and awareness, and earth science education.

A license geologist, Dr. Solidum is also a Career Executive Officer eligible. He is the current president of the Geological Society of the Philippines.

To date, he has published 28 papers and research studies either as principal author or co-author.

Dr. Solidum is married to his high school sweetheart at the Romblon Agricultural College (RAC) in Odiongan, the former Gladys Mortel with whom he has three children.

He graduated valedictorian at the Odiongan South Central Elementary School in 1976 and RAC High School in 1980.
