Asi Artist in Mindanao

by Rinzi Fadrilan

Name photographers in Davao City on learning that this Romblon-born artist is joining a photo contest would one by one withdraw participation or simply back out of the competition. They know pretty well of their slim chance of topping him in photography.

International photographer, Evangelino Famarin, has created a name for himself in his community in Davao City, in his workplace in Dipolog City, and in many international art contests.

Artist photographer Famarin was born in Banton, Romblon where he also finished his elementary and secondary education.

In college, he took up a bachelor's course in industrial arts at the then Philippine School of Arts and Trades (now Technological University of the Philippines) in Manila.

After graduation from college, he was offered a teaching job at the University of Mindanao in Davao City. Here, he pursued and finished his master's course in education. After earning his master's degree, he started work on his doctoral program.

He continued his doctoral studies at GIMEN in Davao City and graduated with a Ph.D. in Education degree in 1979. He also finished another post-graduate program through distance education from the International Academy of Management and Economics (IAME) in Makati City in 1984.

Dr. Famarin taught humanities, art education, practical arts, and social sciences at the UM college department up to 1996. While teaching in the university, he continued to nurture and develop his skills in painting and photography.

He seldom misses to join art and photo contests- submitting entries to local, national and international competitions.

For him, joining art and photo contests, is one way of serving his country and giving it a good name in the international community of nations.

In schoolyear 1997-98, he transferred to the public school system starting as Grade 1 Teacher in the Division of City Schools, Dipolog City. Two years later, he was promoted to school Principal and later to Education Supervisor.

Some of the international art and photo tilts where Famarin participated and won awards are the Photo Contest on World Population in West Germany (1975), International Red Cross Photography Contest in Geneva, Switzerland (1982), International Youth Photo Contest in Washington D. C. (1985), and World Scout Photo Contest in Italy (1986).

He won second place in the World Scout Photo Contest, was chosen one of six finalists in world population photo contest, and landed at 18th place in the international youth photo contest.

In local and national photo contests, Famarin won the top prize in the following competitions: DEMS Black and White Photo Contest, Kayamanang Pampamayanan Photo Contest, Araw ng Dabaw '94, Philippine Graphic In Search for Heroes, and Traffic Photo Contest.

Topping his achievements in art and phtography was his inclusion in the Who's Who in the World, 15th Edition book of achievers in 1997.

Dr. Famarin is more than an educator and artist. He is also an abstract painter and photo journalist. Art teacher. Logo designer. Cartoonist. International photographer.

Despite his achievements, he chose not to rest on his laurels yet. He continues to improve on and perfect his art.
