Romblon "Maestras" are top public servants
by Rinzi Fadrilan

The Romblomanon ("maestra") schoolteacher's hard work and dedication to her teaching job has finally earned for her national acclaim.

In the 2002 Honor Awards Program of the Civil Service Commission (CSC), three lady teachers and one school utility worker, all from the school division of Romblon made it to the honor roll of public servants.

This is also an honor for the Province of Romblon for garnering the most number of awardees for a single province in the annual search for outstanding government workers.

The awardees include Linda F. Fadriquelan, principal, Mabini National High School in Corcuera; Myrna Fabro Malicsi, teacher, Pato-o Elementary School in Odiongan; Jasmin Bordo Molo, mobile teacher, district office in San Fernando; and Brent G. Pastor, utility worler, Looc National High School in Looc.

Fadriquelan was awarded the Dangal ng Bayan Award for outstanding act of public service and consistent demonstration of exemplary ethical behavior.
Malicsi and Molo were both conferred the Pag-asa Award for their consistent dedicated performance exemplifying the best in their jobs.

Utility worker Pastor was awarded the Katangi-tanging Bihasang Manggagawa Award as an outstanding blue-collar worker in the government service.

Principal motivator

The commission cited Principal Linda Fadriquelan for her utmost devotion in urging students to pursue their studies despite their economic difficulties. Her convincing power resulted in a zero drop out rate of students in her school for the past ten school years. Fadriquelan was also responsible for the improvement of the school grounds through bayanihan without cost to the government. She invited parents and volunteers to undertake noteworthy projects for the school.

Myrna Malicsi's feat in handling a multi-grade class in Pato-o Elementary School made her a shining example of resolution and patience. She did not receive additional pay for this special teaching assignment. To reach her school, Malicsi has to walk three to four hours twice a week passing through rivers, tributaries, and forests.

Jasmin Molo's conscious efforts to alleviate the plight of our Mangyan brothers in Romblon earned for her the Pag-asa award. Traveling through mountains and forests is not a hindrance to her job of nurturing the minds and spirits of her Mangyan pupils. Her partnering work with other government agencies resulted in the provision of legal and medical services.

Man in blue

Brent Pastor belongs to the group of men in blue with a broad range of trade skills and talents. His ingenuity in various crafts has benefited most the Looc National High School. He is very much more than a utility man. He is also a building and wiring electrician; he repairs electrical wiring and electronic appliances. He was able to put to work the school generator which was not functioning for quite sometime.

The Honor Awards Program is open to officials and employees of the government, elective and appointive, whether in the career and non-career service including military and police personnel. The program likewise covers elective and appointive barangay officials in accordance with law.
